  • Description

Cristo Liurai is located in the western part of Letefoho. Led by Luis Santos de Jesus (a school teacher by day), 15 smallholder farmers show a great respect for their coffee and the land on which it is grown.

Harvesting is not easy due to the steep terrain and dense forests. Members need to make the daily hike up the mountain to harvest their cherries, and at the end of the day will then carry their harvest back down the mountain, often balancing sacks of up to 30kg on their shoulders.

This last few years has seen increased early afternoon cloud coverage settling around the southern part of the Cristo Liurai. Because of this, drying times with are slightly longer, however good things come to those who wait - the resulting coffee is deliciously clean, sweet and well balanced.

2023 has seen construction of a seedling nursery in Eratoi, where together with Simao the field manager and lead farmer of the Eratoi group, the cooperative will be looking to cultivate new coffee and shade tree seedlings.

  • Origin

East Timor is small country with a population of only 13 million  people. Coffee has been grown here since 1815 when the Portuguese first brought the crop to their former colony.

The country has a troubled past and only gained independence in 2002. However, in recent years East Timor has made huge strides in producing specialty coffee. Its remote and lesser known regions in particular are beginning to demonstrate the quality potential of coffees being produced.

This is particularly true in the Letefoho region, which is set in the dramatic and stunningly beautiful north west of the country, much of which is at altitudes of up to 1900 metres above seal level.
