Guatemala Red De Mujeres Single Origin Coffee Beans
Red de Mujeres is a network of 830 female coffee producers spread across the Huehuetenango region. The language and culture is very diverse in this area of Guatemala, with over 8 different Mayan languages spoken.
Many of these women were widowed during 36 years of Civil war, whilst others husbands fled the country during the coffee crisis between 2001 and 2004.
A cooperative has formed, uniting many of these female farmers and to help them market the coffee internationally. It is called ACODIHUE. With help from ACODIHUE, these women are supported in their education, organic farming, pest control and fertilizer methods. The lead the way in exceptional quality coffee!
Whilst geographically small, Guatemala is one of the world's top ten coffee producers. There is an emphasis on producing high quality washed coffee, experimenting with fermentation and highlighting the terroir.
Guatemala has been relatively successful in marketing its coffees to the rest of the world, clearly defining its regions and emphasizing different growing areas and farms. Many farms are found on the coastal slopes in the central and southern regions of the country, where altitudes range from 750 – 1800 masl.
Coffee is harvested between November and February, depending on the elevation. However this particular lot comes from the Western Higlands, close to the Mexican border.
